First of all the credit for this topic goes to my old boss at SWP Malice.
Welcome to wrestling school, Jobber!

That's right, you're here for the Malice school of hard knocks to earn your stripes in the world of competitive professional wrestling. Let's start with the most basic need of most federations: interesting stories, and the means to tell them.

Role playing is important because it tells the story of your character in and out of the ring. If you don't RP, all the skills in the world will get you no where fast. Let's look at a similar real world comparison to Shelton Benjamin. He has all the in ring skills in the world, and could very well be the best pure wrestler on the WWE's roster. However, he has all the personality of a cardboard cutout. And until lately, was never given much of a true spotlight.

The Basics

The fundamentals of Role Playing are simple. You want to tell a story, in a somewhat concise manner, and yet convey enough details to keep the audience reading. There are several important ingredients to every RP.

First is the story itself: what message are you sending with your RP? Are you challenging someone? Are you setting up a character alignment turn? Are you just providing comic relief? Make sure you never lose sight of your intended story. It is often useful to write down a rough draft or outline before you start your actual RP.

Second is the environment. Where is the story taking place? Who is there? What kind of sounds can we hear? While normal writing indicates this is exceptionally important, we want to limit it to significant things. Location, and maybe some atmosphere and participants. We aren't writing a novel, but we still have to tell the story.

Third is creativity. It doesn't matter how good a story teller you are if you tell the same lame story everyone else does. Jump out and be creative. If you are working on a big story, run it through all the participants you would like to have involved before hand. Communication is a huge key to successful RPing when dealing with others.

5Questions of RP

This is all great, but how do we apply it, you ask? Well, we look at the 5 questions.

1. Where is the story taking place?

2. Who is involved?

3. What actions are taking place?

4. Does my Flash tell the whole story?

5. If I were a stranger reading this, would I understand everything that is happening?

If you ask those questions about every RP you write, you'll notice them getting longer and fuller, because you'll answer those questions, and find what is lacking. Good RP takes time and effort to create, and you'll find that even simple almost pointless interviews will take a new shape when you answer all five questions.

Role Play Organization

Organizing your Role plays is very crucial to having it be effective. No one wants to read a giant block o' text©️ pasted in the middle of a show. Breaking the Role Play down into types of statements works well. Actions should be one font (I use italicized) and are easier to decipher as actions if they have dividers on them (I use italics to set my actions apart, some people use "*"s, and others still use nothing).

I use a different color for each person's dialogue to make it easier to determine who is speaking. I also bold the names of any wrestler or significant NPC (Non-Player-Character) in the role play (i.e. William). It is imperative to preface every dialogue with the speaker's name in case you forget to format the color. Otherwise the reader may become confused.

When Role Playing, you need to always speak in the present tense for shows, except when referring to something that actually isn't happening as the reader reads it (Flash backs, etc). Remember, when a show airs, the viewer is seeing it live as it happens.

Tips to Help You Write a Better Role Play

KISS: Keep It Simple, Stupid. Don't go too over the top, especially out of nowhere. Start with simple stories and build them into cooperative masterpieces.

Patience. Don't rush your Flashes. Write them down, and flesh them out later. Don't get in such a hurry to reveal your big secret that you forgo a proper build. The anticipation of a great event is a tremendously powerful tool. Don't pull the trigger too soon on a great match without teasing it and giving a good back story to it. This should happen over the course of multiple shows, and should have a big pay off at the end. This doesn't mean every RP should be this huge epic build to a monster blow off at a PPV, but there should be some. No one wants to watch show after show of everyone screaming "open challenge".

That brings me to creativity. You can't fake this or manufacture it. Unfortunately, making something completely original is really tough a lot of the time. There's good news for you though borrowing different aspects of stories you like can work to make a good story when put together. Just remember, try not to copy any story line exactly as much as you just use it for inspiration.

Conclusion

There are some great RPers out there. Some have clashing styles and others have excellent adaptation skills. Many RPers spit out garbage with 2 seconds of thought, without ever striving for more. While that may be the bare minimum and actually cut it, you should always try to make your stories the best they can be. A captivating story with an excellent interaction can make up for a poor match any day. A great match won't mean much without a good story to back it though.

You should always try to tell the best story you can, and stay true to the characters in the story (particularly if some of them aren't your own characters). I can't stress enough the value of taking 20 minutes to read over and edit your RP just once before you post it as a final. This can take a drab, simple 4 line interview segment and turn it into a colorful, emotional interview that has others responding. After all, Role playing is about interacting with others. While there are solo RPs, the best ones come when two or more people get together and really work on a message to send to the reader. Make your RPs the one they want to join.

Guide To Not Sucking

By Larry Pupkin

Do you want to improve your roleplaying skills? Well come and have a look and I'll tell you how!

While the UCE is always brimming with talent and experience you can't help but feel for all those other wrasslers in all those lesser fed; the new guys, the special kids and the downright idiots. So for just a little while I'll take my elitist head out of my elitist ass and give these guys a helping hand. That's right, it's Larry Pupkin's certifiable Guide To Not Sucking.

#1. Uh oh, Johnny Jobber has just posted a five line diatribe where he punches you in the face three and a half times and even calls you a "jabroni"! Are you going to take that? Or are you going to grow some balls and do something about it!?

Now if you're just skimming this and are already bored, then I don't care if you don't want to read the rest as long as I can impart this piece of vital information to you: SELL EVERYTHING!!!! You think four exclamation marks were too many? Wrong. In my always correct opinion, if you can sell everything that's thrown your way, whether it's a blatant OSBD or someone putting you in a compromising situation involving a blow up sheep, then you're already a better RP'er than most. SELL EVERYTHING. SELL EVERYTHING. SELL EVERYTHING. Got it? Good.

#2. Oh god, you can't believe it. Now Johnny Jobber has gone and posted off you and he's made you predominantly use your right hand when in your last post you clearly stated you were left handed! What a noob! No-sell! No-sell!

Ahem. Now before you go crying to your commish, mother or stuffed teddy bear take a deep breath and calm yourself down. Although this may seem hard, convince yourself that it really isn't the end of the world and that everyone is NOT out to get you. While it's easy for me to scream at you to sell everything, telling you simply to not no-sell isn't so easy. A fact of life is that everyone no-sells, from the lowliest regional wrassler to the USOB champion himself. Nobody is perfect... well, apart from me. What you have to realize is that nearly 99% of no-selling is unintentional. Johnny Jobber didn't mean to do it, it was just a mistake. Forgive him... let it go... take the gun away from your head... everything will be ok. Yes, it can be frustrating and yes it can be annoying but as long as you don't get too worked up about it then it should be easily rectified via a quick private message or a concise post on the OOC board.

#3. Oh dear. Your character DeAdmAnTAKER316 has just set up the most serious angle in the world and your weeks of solitary posting where you just hang around in dark corners of the arena and brood could be completely wasted because Johnny Jobber posted off you and... *GASP*... he's making jokes! What the hell are you going to do?!

Another key to being a great roleplayer is flexibility. If you want to be remembered as a truly amazing player of the game you've got to be able to hang with both serious and comedic players alike. Now this is a contentious issue with an invisible barrier often being seen between the two camps. Surely Camp Comedy can't mix with Camp Serious, no? Well I'm here to tell you that comedy and seriousness can mix! Yes, I know how it sounds but just try this wacky and dangerous theory and see if you like it. You still think I'm insane? Well, I'll give you an example, jackass. The example I present to you is the long established tag team of 'Drunk with Power', consisting of wrasslers Hooligan and Mike Anthony. Hooligan: A serious wrassler who likes to drink and swear a lot. Yeah, I know, but we're giving out points for flexibility here; not originality. Mike Anthony: a comedic, zany Juggalo with a love for ice-cream. Now as a tag team these two mainly interacted with each other for years even though they were completely different in just about every respect! So there you go, proof that both serious and comedic can mix. So next time some guy approaches you and he seems to be... *GASP*... smiling, take time to get to know him before running away like a little girl... in a dark, brooding and serious manner of course.

Pacing

By Sarah Anne

I''ve noticed this in a lot of younger players posts and such...and I just want to say my two cents on things. You can take this under consideration or you can just forget about it and ignore it. Doesn''t matter to me.

Pacing.

It doesn''t matter if it is wrestling, an action movie, a weepy chick flick, TV show or even your good old fashioned high end porno... every well-crafted story needs good pacing.

Build up is very important in any form of entertainment, it is essential for your story''s climax to have it''s full potential. Read a book and I''m sure you''ll find a beginning, a middle, and an end. You never see a book that goes from the beginning straight to the end of the book.

Every good and great movie has build-up and good pacing leading to it''s climax. If you rush the climax of the story, it seems contrived, uneventful. It doesn''t have the same pow, the same wham bam thank you ma''am sizzle to it.

Every great wrestling storyline you have ever witness had excellent pacing. If you watch wrestling these days, you can see when they rush a product and it doesn''t have the same sizzle that it should have when it comes down to the money match, the climax [I''m focusing in on that word]

Wrassle is no different. All the great feuds and stories that have been told in this game have been paced across a good long distance. Some feuds last over a half a year, even a year. It doesn''t mean that is the end all, say all of what you have to do during that time but you could do so much with a angle or feud by being willingly to put it on a back burner for a bit.

And this includes "money matches". High concept matches or very gimmicky matches lose their appeal, their luster if they are overused. Once again, you want to build up to it.

In closing...in everything, it''s that end result...that climax...that closing chapter that you end up remember and looking back on. But often, it''s the trip there that enhances the way that climax occurred.

Those were my twenty-two cents.

This might be your First Fed, This might be your 3rd Fed. Either way partner, Each Fed has its own way of doing things

This is how we work things here... step by step

.
1. Planning
firstly understand what it is you are planning to say with your RP... if you writing an RP which is meant to be interupted then know when your meant to stop. like most stories, you need a beginning, middle and end before you can carry on. there are guides here to help you with this.

.
2. Construction
write out your RP without worrying about format yet... there is no point in being fussy yet, concerntrate on you matierial rather then how it looks. once you have writen an rp, which hopefully is longer then 10 lines, then proceed to the next step.

.
3. Spacing
This Step is helpfull to VGMs and will get you bonus brownie points. once you have written out your RP, make sure there is a white full stop so in the show it formats as spaceing between your lines of RP. an example has been shown to you in this post with the white Full Stops that have been inserted in this Guide

.
4. Color
This is my Favourite part of RPing... Making it Colorful. now our Commentators are always Dark Red for Edward and Orange For Chris. Our Ring announcer is Kate, Who is used in red and Interviewer Nikita is in yellow. Please try to avoid using Cyan. this color is very bright and should be used more for the person focused on in the RP rather then the staff.
as far as other colors go, your welcome to use any colors as long as they are readable.
black is not a color we would suggest using as it is hard to read on the forum, and very blendable in the show.
make sure you use constant colors for the same person (so no switching to purple after you have been blue). also try to avoid using the same colors as staff you use in your RP (so if Nikita is in your RP dont Color yourself yellow) a nice tip on adding colors is to hit the AA button which changes the view so you dont have to see the [ colur=blue] blah blah blah
[ /color] part.
.
5. Name Presentation and Descriptions
My Least Favoutite part of RPing. Once you are done with your coloring and adding spaces, you need to make sure everyones names are Bold. this is so it looks presentable. obviously Capitals at the Begining of peoples names too. also for any description like mike picks up a sledgehammer ect... you need to put that on a seperate line and italic it so it looks like a description (also leave it in deualt colur/grey). if you want to be extra kind to us VGMs you can also add descriptions of where you want your picture to be put, the banner, ect ect

.
6. Corrections
read through your masterpiece, see if your happy with it and it follows all the right formating rules... you can do this by pressing preview.. once you are done then press post (make sure it is in the right week and right shows RP section)

.
If You have any Questions then take your pick a VGM/GM and hit them with a pm. We Will be more then happy to help.
will post an example of a perfectly well formated PM below

example:

.
Leo is seen pacing outside Skullduggery Pleasant's Dressing room.

.
leo pic
.
Leo:
OK! He is just a skeleton, Just a skeleton... who walks... and talks...
and wears expensive suits... oh and he wrestles *he sighs* they don't
pay me enough for this

.
Leo steels himself walks up to SP's Locker room and Knocks.
.
SP pic
.
SP: Ahhh Leo my friend hows things your looking typically anxious
.
Leo: heh well its not every day you meet... whatever it is you are
.
SP: I'm me.
.
Leo: What are you Mr.Pleasant.
.
SP: Amazing Leo I'm simply amazing.
.
Leo: Err can you get over yourself for just a moment.
.
SP: Ah if only that were possible.
.
Leo: You Know for a person with no internal organs you have quite the ego.
.
SP: For a person who has no combat training of any sort your quite the critic ahh what a pair we make eh Leo.
.
Both laugh as Leo finally starts to feel at ease around Skullduggery.

.
Leo: Anyway Mr.Pleasant...
.
SP:Skullduggery please.
.
Leo:
Skullduggery How do you feel about the fact that some people have been
saying that before the match even starts you will be losing.

.
SP: There's No such thing.
.
Leo: What?
.
SP:
There's no such thing as winning or losing, there is won and there is
lost there is victory and there is defeat these are the absolutes
everything in between is still to fight for. I will only have lost when
I stop fighting until then there is only the struggle because tides do
what tides do they turn.

.
Leo:
Be that as it may you are still facing overwhelming odds 4 opponents
who you have never faced and 1 opponent who beat you just 3 days ago
and he is the last opponent in to the gauntlet so he will be fresh and
assuming you make it past the first 4 I'm sure even you Skullduggery
will be tired and drained.

.
SP:
This was never going to be an easy fight setbacks and challenges are to
be expected but you know what ill do Ill plow straight through them
because I have no other choice.

.
Leo: What are you going to do then Skullduggery.
.
SP:*Skullduggery tilts his head in what appears to be a puzzled fashion* Haven't you been listening I'm going to win the gauntlet match I just made a whole speech about it. it was very good.
.
Leo: Well good luck your going to need it.
.
SP: Who needs luck when your as handsome as me.
.
Leo: *It's Leos turn to look puzzled* You have no face how can you be handsome.
.
SP: I hear size 0 is all the rage these days.
.
The camera pans of as Leo and SP laugh.
